Last Friday

It’s Monday morning and I am back at work after a fun filled weekend. It all started out Friday morning while I was at work. I spent most of the morning in the ME computer lab working on programming, but after a while I got kinda stuck. All the computers in the lab have webcams for video conferencing and collaborating on work with students in Germany and all over the world, but I used the webcam to take a picture of myself being perplexed by some code:

I decided to give up and go down to the Fluids lab to see what the grad students were up to and see if there was something else I could work on beside programming. When I got down to the lab I was surprised to see that none of the grad students were working, they were all just sitting around and tossing a football. I soon learned that it was lab maintenance day and they were supposed to mop the floors then paint them (the floors are bare concrete and for some reason needed to be painted grey). They had just finished mopping the floors and were taking an extended break, mostly because our professor (aka boss) was out of town. Now this all got me pretty excited because after spending the whole morning attempting (and failing) to write some programs, hanging out and painting the floors seemed like a lot of fun. So, I joined in on the football tossing. We almost broke some expensive equipment and nearly knocked over the bucket of dirty mop water (engineering grad students aren’t always the most athletic bunch). When it came time to start painting, one of the grad students told me that I didn’t need to help and that since it was a nice day I should go home and go to the river or something. I didn’t really think she was serious, but then she told me that she was serious and that our professor (aka boss) wasn’t there so I really should just take the afternoon off. I took her advice and left work a little after 1pm.

On my way home from work I ran into Duncan and James, who were on their way too the pool. I biked home and got my suit and they picked me up and we were off to the Terrace View pool. The pool was quite enjoyable, with plenty of spectator friendly sunbathers. Duncan got some sun (burn) while James and I played Frisbee and saw who could hold their breath underwater the longest (me).

After the pool, Duncan, James and I went straight to TOTS for some burgers and a couple of pitchers. TOTS was completely empty (it was only 4 o’clock at this point) but the food was good. Sitting on the deck at TOTS on a nice afternoon (while I’m supposed the be at work), drinking a few beers with your friends while Jimmy Buffet plays over the sound system…I mean, that’s what summer is all about.

After TOTS we headed back to Houston street and played some cornhole, which has become pretty much a daily event for us. While we were playing cornhole, Andrew pulled into the parking lot in his mom’s Volvo station wagon. Andrew was in town to build his Flugtag for the Redbull Flugtag competition (there is a link to his website in the links section). Upon his arrival Andrew promptly ate some dinner then left us to build his Flugtag, but he did bring us some Yuengling.

Later that night we were all playing Kings with the girls across the street and we instituted a new rule that we learned about from one of the ZAP fitness runners. The original rule is that every time someone swears they have to eat a peep, which for some people can end up being a lot of peeps (which mixed with a lot of beer isn’t always pleasant). We didn’t have enough peeps so we just used regular marshmallows, which along with some ruthless and revealing “never have I ever”, made for a fun game.

And all that was just Friday. There was lots more shenanigans on Saturday and we almost saw a bear while hiking on Sunday, but I’ll let James or someone else write about that. Also, be sure the check out Bryan’s new blog which is in the links.
